Executive summary

Sustainability is one of the most pressing concerns of our time. The EU Commission recognised the importance of sustainability for the financial services sector. In consequence, it launched a Sustainable Finance initiative with the declared goal to decrease the environmental and social disruption in the financial services sector .

The EU Commission is pursuing this goal vigorously by publishing an action plan and wide set of first regulation drafts in March and May 2018 in general focusing:

  • Reorientation of capital flows towards sustainable investment
  • Management of the financial risks resulting from environmental challenges and
  • Promotion of transparency and sustainability in financial as well as economic activities

The Sustainable Finance Initiative, but also the changing customer perception for sustainability are of utmost importance for all banks and financial service providers to face related business and organisational implications as quick as possible.
